Dental Insurance In Kitchener

What to know about coverage MI Dental

The Ultimate Guide To Dental Insurance
Confused about dental insurance in Kitchener? Learn how coverage, co-pays and government plans like CDCP work, with insights from MI Dental.

Things You Should Know About Dental Insurance in Kitchener

At MI Dental, your trusted dentist in Kitchener, we understand that dental insurance can be a confusing and sometimes frustrating part of your dental experience. Understanding your coverage and benefits can help you plan ahead and make empowered decisions about your oral health. Here is a patient-friendly guide to everything you should know about dental insurance in Canada.

What is Dental Insurance?

Dental insurance is a financial product offered by insurance companies to help cover the cost of dental care. It typically comes in a few categories of coverage:

  1. Preventive Care — exams, scalings (plaque and tartar removal), polishing, oral hygiene instructions, Fluoride and X-rays. Typically covered at 100%.
  2. Basic Care — includes fillings, gum therapies, root canals and extractions, often covered at 70–80%.
  3. Major Care — crowns, bridges, dentures and implant-supported crowns. These are usually covered at 50%.
  4. Orthodontic Services — braces, retainers and jaw alignment corrections. Partially covered in some plans.

Not all plans cover every category, and cosmetic procedures (like whitening or veneers) are usually not included. Orthodontic benefits may have lifetime maximums.

Why Dental Insurance Matters

Dental care in Kitchener can be expensive and having insurance can make the difference between delaying necessary care and staying on top of your health. Most plans cover:

Understanding deductibles and annual maximums can help you plan and avoid any unexpected costs.

How Dental Care Works in Canada

Most routine dental services are not covered under Canada’s universal health care, exceptions include in hospital dental surgeries. Some groups (e.g. veterans, First Nations, children under 12) may qualify for special programs.

How Canadians Get Dental Coverage

  1. Workplace Benefits – Usually more affordable with group coverage.
  2. Personal Insurance – Greater flexibility, paid directly by the individual.
  3. Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) – Government plan for those with no coverage and income under $90,000. Coverage ranges 40–100%, depending on income.

Assignment of Benefits vs. Direct Billing

We offer assignment of benefits (also called direct billing), which means we send your claim to your insurer and they pay us directly.

However:

  • We are not a party to your policy.
  • Insurers are not obligated to communicate with us.
  • Always verify your benefits through your provider portal.

Why You Might Still Have an Out-of-Pocket Expense

“100% coverage” might refer to an outdated fee guide. At MI Dental, we follow the current year ODA Fee Guide. If your insurer uses an older fee guide, you will owe the difference even if your plan says it covers everything.

Check if your plan follows a calendar year or anniversary year so you don’t miss out on annual maximums.

Understanding Co-Payments, Deductibles & Maximums

  • Co-payment: Portion of the bill you pay (e.g. 20% in an 80/20 plan).
  • Deductible: Amount paid before coverage begins.
  • Annual Maximum: Cap your insurer will pay annually.

Predeterminations and Estimates

We send estimates (PDs) before treatment so you know your coverage ahead of time. Note: some insurers only reply to the policyholder. Please check your insurer’s response before your visit.

Coordination of Benefits

If you are covered under two plans (e.g., yours and a spouse’s), your benefits may be coordinated:

  • One plan pays first
  • The second may cover the balance

Check both policies for details.

Your Responsibility

While we help submit claims and send estimates, it is your responsibility to:

  • Understand your policy
  • Check responses from insurers
  • Be prepared for any balance not covered

Common Myths

  • “My dentist can waive my co-pay.” ❌ Illegal.
  • “100% covered means no bill.” ❌ Depends on the fee guide.
  • “My dentist should know my benefits.” ❌ Insurers don’t share full details with us.

Maximize Your Dental Insurance

  • Book cleanings and exams regularly
  • Track your annual maximum
  • Use your plan’s online portal
  • Schedule major work wisely
  • Set reminders near renewal periods
